Stilwell Animal Hospital and Equine Center, P.A is interested in using advanced scientific therapies when indicated to help treat previously untreatable injuries in both small animal and equine. By using these therapies, we are able to manipulate the body’s own biological mechanisms to stimulate healing. Although these therapies may not always provide a cure, by understanding the science behind these regenerative medicine therapies, an individual may obtain a reasonable expectation for the success of these treatments. Please feel free to discuss any of our treatment options with our veterinarians to determine if this is a good option for your companion
Medivet Stem Cell Therapy
We at Stilwell Animal Hospital and Equine Center, P.A. are proud to offer the power of MediVet stem cell therapy to our clients for their animals. We have experienced positive results in all of our cases. The collection of the adipose(fat) tissue is achieved by a simple surgical procedure in small animals or by a minimally invasive liposuction technique in the horse. These dormant stem cells are separated, then activated with MediVet’s patented LED technology and then injected directly into the affected areas or intravenously. This same day procedure can benefit both acute and chronic injuries. We have experienced successful treatment for tendon and ligament injuries in both small animal and equine as well as healing benefits, decreased pain and increased quality of life for our osteoarthritis patients.
Stem cells are powerful healing cells in your body that can become other types of cells. There are many adult stem cells in fat tissue, however they are asleep. MediVet’s stem cell therapy allows your vet to isolate stem cells from an animal’s own fat tissue, wake them up, and reinject them directly into damaged areas. For example, in the case of arthritis, stem cells become new cartilage cells, thus reducing pain and increasing mobility.
Stem cells treat the source of the problem by becoming new tissue to replace damaged tissue. Other treatments, such as NSAIDs, merely attempt to reduce symptoms. The treatment is very low risk, because it uses the animal’s own stem cells. With MediVet’s technology, over 95% of animals treated show improvement.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
When a patient is injured, platelets and white blood cells surround the damaged area to begin the healing process. With PRP, the patient’s own blood is used to obtain a concentrated solution of the patient’s platelets and numerous growth factors. This “platelet rich” portion is used in conjunction with stem cell therapy but can also be used as a stand-alone form of treatment. Veterinarians clinically use PRP to aid in soft and hard tissue healing such as tendon and ligament healing, tissue defects, and aiding with treatment involving degenerative joint changes.
IRAP™ therapy which stands for Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein has been used with success treating a variety of inflammatory conditions, joint lameness, muscle injuries, and tendon and ligament injuries. This special syringe contains glass beads that are specially treated. These beads when combined with a horse’s whole blood stimulate the white blood cells to produce cytokines which are both anti-inflammatory and regenerative. The whole blood must be incubated overnight and then centrifuged to collect the serum which is then re-injected into the patient.
